Germany’s inflation rate increased to 2.0% in October 2024, according to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This marked a rise from the lower rates of 1.6% in September and 1.9% in August. The inflationary pressure was mainly fueled by a rise in food prices and ongoing above-average price hikes in services. However, energy prices continued to exert a dampening effect, although less significantly than in previous months.
Food prices were notably higher, rising by 2.3% year-on-year in October 2024. This acceleration from 1.6% in September was driven by sharp increases in items like edible oils and fats, with butter prices soaring by 39.7% and olive oil by 28.1%. Other food categories, such as fruits, vegetables, and sweets, also saw price hikes, contributing to the overall increase in the cost of living.
Energy prices, however, fell by 5.5% year-on-year, providing some relief to consumers. This decrease followed a 7.6% drop in September. Prices for motor fuels, household energy, and heating oil all saw declines, although district heating costs remained significantly higher compared to last year.
Excluding volatile food and energy prices, core inflation stood at 2.9% in October, highlighting continued price pressures in other essential sectors. Service prices, in particular, saw a sharp 4.0% rise, driven by higher costs for insurance, social services, and hospitality. Within services, transport insurance experienced a notable surge of 31.9%, while restaurant and café services also increased by 6.8%.
Month-on-month, overall consumer prices rose by 0.4%, with mineral oil products and food prices both increasing, particularly for butter, which spiked by 9.9%. Meanwhile, sugar prices fell dramatically by 19.9%, illustrating the mixed nature of price movements across different goods.
